Greek Rebetiko Night

We invite you to an evening of Greek rebetiko music performed by two different bands, Yarès and The Kompanoi.

Yarès is a duo formation (accordion, guitar, voices) focusing on Greek rebetiko music, best described as the music of the Greek immigrants from Minor Asia. Their repertoire explores less known songs about the love and hardship of the working class and of the Greek urban society of the previous century. Fotis and Nicolas formed Yarès in an effort to share their love for rebetiko and make the songs they enjoy known to the public abroad. They have been active for more than five years and have performed in various venues across Belgium, Greece and the UK.

The Kompanoi is a London-based collective united by a shared love for rebetiko music. The group consists of a 3-course bouzouki (Thomas), folk guitar (George), accordion (Nikos) and two female voices (Cleopatra and Rodanthi) and their repertoire ranges from the early rebetiko of the 1930s with its Anatolian influences and Piraeus roots, to its development to more westernised and modern formats in the 1960s-70s.
